Thank you, Laibcoms, for your great comments about your use of the terms "ASEAN" and "Asean".

Your approach is very logical and though out. Are you Asean?

Some questions to consider:

If you represented ASEAN and you set out to effectively and efficiently promote the region as a regional travel destination to rival Europe and the Caribbean; and to encourage global consumers to plan longer trips and visit more than one Asean (ASEAN-member) nation; do you still think Asean would be a more recognizable term than Southeast Asia?

If you were, hypothetically, to conclude that Southeast Asia is more recognizable among the world's prospective travelers, do you think an excellent opportunity then presents itself to leverage that recognition in order to 1) promote travel to the region; and 2), introduce ASEAN and its vision of integration?

Anyone, everyone should feel free to comment.

Laibcoms "Asean" (not "South-East Asia") 0 Jul 8 2009, 5:11 AM EDT by Laibcoms

“Asean” (with a capital letter ‘A’ and the rest lowercase) is more appropriate today and as to the goals of “ASEAN” (the org) and “Aseans” (the people/region).

Now this is my personal "usage".
"ASEAN" - refers to the organization
"Asean" - refers to the people
"Asean" - also refers to the region - replacing "South-East Asia"

One will argue that Timor-Leste is part of South-East Asia but not "ASEAN" and hence can not be part of "Asean" (the new name of "SEA"). Well, I can say that Timor-Leste is historically never been a part of South-East Asia. Together with Papua New Guinea, it is considered part of Oceania. When Indonesia conquered Timor-Leste, that's when it started to become part of "South-East Asia".

Secondly, Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea are active observers of the "ASEAN" (the org) and numerous times and are actively gathering support for their bid to join the grouping. So we will end up, no matter what, referring to the region (and it has been this way for some years already) as "Asean".

"ASEAN" for the org, "Asean" for the people and region.

We also have, and some companies and websites are already using ACT which is the "Asean Common Time" (not "ASEAN Common Time") = UTC+0800. It is and will never be called as "South-East Asian Common Time" or "SEACT".

Talk about the "Asean Identity", "Asean Economy", etc.

Again, it is my personal distinction between "ASEAN" (the org) and "Asean" the people/region.

And of course, the poll is about "Good Tourism", but then why use "South-East Asia" when the whole world knows "Asean" and hears about "ASEAN" more than "South-East Asia"??

^_^
