Let's move on from 'sustainable' tourism to 'good' tourism - which ALL tourism should be (another thread is discussing this). We need to understand how to make tourism 'good'.
All tourism should be resilient - able to withstand or absorb change. Through my work in Asia (leading tours, community development, consultancy and research) I've realised the key factors in resilience are: 1) understanding & harnessing market forces 2) strong stakeholder networks 3) strong leadership within a strong institutional framework. These factors must work within a context of learning, adaptability and flexibility. We can think of this as the 'Sphere of Tourism Resilience'. Knowing these are the important factors means we can advise, plan and implement effective interventions. These findings have come partly out of research into tourism revival after the tsunami in Sri Lanka and Thailand - I'd gladly share these with interested parties. I'd also welcome your comments! Best regards Janet

“Svoi Ludi”, individual rest and tourism studio, carried out a minisurvey among tourists in order to difine the most memorable sights in Sochi and its suburbs. 580 tourists who visited Sochi resort in 2009 were questioned in the research framework.
“Dedndrarii” Park__61% “Millenium Tower Complex_52% Sea terminal building__52% “Platforma” Club__49% Frunze Summer Theatre_34% Yew-box grove__34% Stalin’s house__31% Waterfalls in Sochi National Park_26% Macesta Bridge__23% Voroncov caves__18% “Blue Sea” Restaurant__16% Salmon Factory “Adler”__11% Rodina” Grand Hotel%SPA__ 9% Akhun Tower__4% “Mayak” Aquapark__4% Singing Fountaines__2% Other__2% The results of the survey show that the majority of the tourists (61%) recalled Dendrarii Park as the most impressive, more than a half of the respondents (52%) remembered Residential Complex “Millenium Tower” and the Sea Terminal Building. “Platforma” club finishes the top 3 with 49%. It is remarkable that modern places were named among Sochi traditional culture sights. Below there are examples of tourists’ quotations’ explaining such choice: “This “Millenium Tower” building can be seen from any point in Sochi, it is an example of modern architecture embodying “new” Sochi – a world-class resort. “Millenium Tower” in Sochi to a certain extent can be compared only to “Moscow-City” complex in Moscow. “Platforma” club is remarkable by its atmosphere – such a hot place. You need to come to Sochi just to drop in at it.” “The “Blue Sea” is a restaurant with first-class service, which is so rare in other Russian and Ukrainian resorts. The atmosphere and menu variety are marvellous.” “Thus nowadays tourists are searching not only for historical and cultural sights but are also interested in modern infrastructure, which is vital for a really good holiday. |

Since i work also with property management i noticed that there are many houses that are empty due to the international crisis. After talking to some of the owners i get them to start renting their houses to tourists.
This way the owners make some money and i get to use available touristic resources. This policy will be backed up by ther offers namely on the cultural, sport and gastronomic areas (contacts are being done so we can provide workshops on typical food, pottery and other activities) in order to offer a bit of us for the visitors to take home. This activities will take place all year around trying to fight seasonality. So what you think of it? Please let me know your opinion. Best regards, Ricardo Canaveira

Think we need to focus on 'educating' both tourists and hosts on what tourism really is. A holistic view. Then and then only can we expect change in a real sense. Tough call but each of us need to work at it in whatever we do.
Russ Johnson of Travel Media and I worked on improving on a project we did in 1994 together called "World of Many Faces: An Introduction to the Profession of Travel and Tourism" with this in view. This is not a commercial but to attract your attention to a project we undertook for those who work in travel and those who intend to join the industry. Please check it out ... it is at www.connectedtraveler.com Renton |

Six Senses’ Hub, Bangkok, December 02, 2008: Open for less than one year, Six Senses Hideaway Yao Noi has already chalked up an impressive list of awards. To this, is now added the 2008 Wild Asia Responsible Tourism Award for Luxury and Boutique Resorts.
Wild Asia awards differ from many awards insomuch as the judges visit all finalist properties and professionally evaluate the operation with the award criteria. These include: sense of place - enriching the visitor's understanding of the destination. sustainability – ongoing initiatives for the long term. involvement of guests - guest involvement in this sustainability journey. internalisation - how well sustainability efforts are structured into day-to-day operations. reach – sharing of the ideas and practices across the destination or industry. Wild Asia is a social enterprise working to support the conservation of natural areas and the communities dependent upon their resources. It works primarily by forging partnerships with individuals and businesses that are socially and environmentally responsible. The ultimate goal of Wild Asia is to promote sustainable practices that will minimise adverse impacts on the environment, ensure that local communities are engaged and that local cultures are respected. Other awards that Six Senses Hideaway Yao Noi has been honoured with in 2008 are inclusion in Forbes Traveler.com The World’s 50 Best New Hotels, Travel + Leisure – Southeast Asia The IT List, Elite Traveler 101 Top Hotel Suites of the Year, and Travel + Leisure – US The IT List Condé Nast Traveller UK placed the resort in the Hot List Hotels, with its sister US publication recognizing the resort’s Six Senses Spa in the Hot List Spas. www.sixsenses.com/Six-Senses-Hideaway-Yao-Noi/Environment/Six-Senses-Hideaway-Yao-Noi-Environment.php

We need to add the little dropslets to make the vast ocean of action that is needed to make sure that we create new lifestyles and new sources of energy and new ways of doing business within out industry. This is demanded today by our customers and is not a nice thing we shpuld do as CSR. It is our very survival in the near future, not even the long-term.
Let's look beyond to make sure that we gear up and gear up fast for we do not have time. Seeking Carbon neutrality is a way to go, while there lots of other actions too. Please visit www.earthlung.travel to see what little Sri Lanka is contributing from the travel and tourism industry. Yours in service Renton de Alwis
