Hi there
would appreciate if you could send me your opinions or useful links re positive impacts of tourism. I need it urgently as i am going to participate in a debate with my colleagues in class(I am studying Hospitalilty management and tourism course,2nd year in Greek private university) and have to persuade them that the tourism has mostly positive image.
I am looking forward to your ideas!

Hello Robyn
There are lots of positive impacts - perhaps the most obvious are economic and social. Governments benefit from increased foreign exchange and tax revenues, and local people benefit from job opportunities and increased wealth coming into their community. Socially, there is evidence to show that jobs in the tourism industry are of relatively high status, and that there is an increased propensity for education amongst communities which aspire to work in the industry. There are environmental benefits too, although here the benefits are often mixed with disadvantages: e.g. developing countries use tourism as a rationale for setting aside protected areas of land, while in industrialised countries too many rural areas now depend as much on tourism as they do on agriculture.
Good luck in your debate!
Janet

There are also some great real life, local examples/projects which can be found in the finalists of the Geotourism Competition (http://www.changemakers.net/en-us/node/2104/vote) 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Thanks for that link, Gillenium - lots of great case studies there. I'm always on the lookout for fresh teaching material and positive examples of tourism (I'm a university lecturer / researcher / consultant) and this is very helpful.
Best wishes
Janet

Yes I believe they are having a 2nd round of the competition getting started soon, so if you do know of potential entrants keep an eye out.

Thanks,
Shaun.

It is high time for us travelers to give back to the destinations we love. We all know that tourism is essential for the economy in many areas around the world. Tourists are needed as well as a healthy environment. Sustainable tourism is the only way forward.
You can read more about a project that combines travellers with direct eco-social actions. see http://www.reearth.me

Hi Everyone

We have just joined this forum. We are the oldest NGO for tribes in Asia and all our projects - ECO SCHOOL, Bio diversity tours and Volunteering are 100% non profit. We have just surveyed 260 hill tribe villages in Northern Thailand and found 80% of them are destroyed by tourism and missionaries. This is very depressing for us because we are primarily a cultural organization. We run various programs which put the tribes, shamanism and sacred ecology into context - schooling for sustainability. The profits of these schemes go into making digital media to help create tribal village cooperatives in Laos. Tourism in LAOS is a severe threat and I suggest everyone here to talk about this pressing subject as much as possible. Our media educates tribal societies to benefit from tourism. You can see our site at www.akhaasia.org and our NGO at www.akhathai.org.

Many thanks!
