1. RE: RECESSION AND TOURISM

It is predicted that 2009 will be a slump, but 2010 and 2011 should have a lot of opporunities. So don't change your course just yet! Another prediction is that sustainable tourism will grow strongly, so that is an area to look out for.

"what other branches will face the upward graph in tourism in coming 4-5 yrs"Hi As Cherie says, I doubt if the recession in tourism will last for long - history shows that even if there's a temporary dip in tourism, it always comes back up. I think you'll find Asian regional and domestic markets getting stronger as people's aspirations change and they start to want to travel more and more. This will mean a steady or increased demand for accommodation, attractions and tour operating, all of which will also mean the public sector has to remain involved to regulate planning and development. So I wouldn't worry too much - and certainly don't stop studying! Best regards Janet 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

I do think there will be an overall contraction in travel in 2009, but I think people will still travel – researching more, and looking towards more budget options, probably resulting in more local and national travel. So maybe some countries may have short term declines in international visitors, but better results for domestic travel options. But I agree, I think tourism will bounce back and continue to grow and there is a very bright future, especially with more and more networks like these, and a growing awareness of responsible tourism practices around the globe – which can only help tourism as a whole, especially when compared to many other global industries. i'm also a tourism student and i'm quite sure that i'll have employ in the futur. In my opinion we have to reorganize tourism according to the new demands but that is possible and it's being done as we "write". The green tourism is one of the most promissing products and i really think it will be the future of tourism along with city break and professions related tourism. Do you find this valuable? |

We are finding that people are changing their choices about their holidays - staying closer to home, spending more quality time with the family, prepared to go camping, more walking, enjoying the countryside - the tourism industry is changing, perhaps for the better, perhaps more greener, but not disappearing. Things need to evolve to survive and change this industry is no different, in fact you could see it as a true reflection of how the global community is being driven by the recession. This is an exciting tiem to come into the industry - with a fresh and open mind.

Hi everyone, This is a great discussion and I'd like to join in. To go along with what Loisprior has stated, people these days with this current economic climate will most like stay closer to home. the industry has to change with the market, however, it is easier said then done. I am finding that DMO's need to come up with new strategies to promote tourism from within. By building a sustainable industry from within, will only build a stronger industry in the future. Which in return will attract international tourist once the economy bounces back. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

After reading and hearing a few insider voices, it does seem that many developing countries will not feel the pinch as much... for example our partners in Brazil, Vanuatu (and Ive also read in India) are all looking at maintaining positive tourism growth (touch wood). However in the cases of Brazil and India, the large proportion of tourism is domestic already. But we will need to be able to adapt to the changing climate.... so push for better deals/packages, travelling closer to home, travelling for less time (short breaks) etc. And responsible tourism should not fall to the way side, instead, the more providers that adopt responsible tourism practices will surely then have an extra USP that will open more distribution channels for them… and most importantly easily connect them directly with the traveller for a more authentic experience. Good tourism = good business. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
