Should we go public again?
Dec 18 2008, 11:39 PM EST | Post edited: Dec 18 2008, 11:39 PM EST
Now that this isn't a PATA site anymore -- and is therefore unlikely to continue to be a target for that particular troll -- should we open the Wiki up for public consumption again?

My view is that the point of something like this is to disseminate the philosophies, theories, and best practices of responsible travel and sustainable tourism as widely as possible. However, in saying that, it may pay for us to let a couple of weeks pass before "relaunching" as a public wiki.

Your thoughts please!

Best regards,

D

i think the site must go on and should widen its scope from just sustainable tourism to other areas of tourism and hospitality together 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Thanks Walia,

Well, I've taken it public ... I guess "good tourism" could just as easily be "good travel". Basically what this is, or is meant to be, all about is responsibility and sustainability both on the supply side and the demand side.

Yes, I agree, public is better because it will be accessible to more people. But are we now making it relevant for tourism generally, or specifically for tourism in Asia? I feel there are so many wikis and discussions out there, it would be useful to have one looking at examples in Asia particularly.
Best wishes
Janet

I also agree that public is the way to go to bring in more ideas, thoughts and experiences. A valid suggestion by Janet and I see the merits of keeping it primarily regional. Is there a middle ground here? Can we promote Asia-Pac as the main discussion area (and hence the wiki's main differentiator), but still maybe keeping open some 'Global Discussion' points so we are not alienating people to join and comment (ideas from other regions is sure to still be a positive). Thats my 2 cents ;)

Cheers,
Shaun

5. Geographical scope RE: Should we go public again?

Hi Janet and Shaun,

I've been pondering this; the geographical scope of this forum; "subconsciously" for some time, hence this belated response.

The content of this wiki is by its users for its users, who will (hopefully) visit from wherever it is they can access the internet. I'm not sure it's practical to place limitations on geographical scope. Further, the best examples of "good" tourism development and "good" tourism operations are not necessarily going to be Asian. And while it was PATA's forum, the implication was that the Wiki was Asia Pacific focused, just as PATA is Asia Pacific focused. But I am, we are, citizens of a small planet in a vast universe!

I'm keen for the layman traveller to participate and learn and be inspired by this forum as well. If "good tourism/travel" implies an holistic approach to this business (social, cultural, environmental, financial, etc) then certainly the target market, the traveller, needs to have a voice. The more the market demands "goodness", the more the industry will aspire to provide it. "Good" is less jargonistic (is that a new word?) than "sustainable" et al. Everyone understands what "good" is and how it makes them feel, even if they may not (yet) have taken an holistic view. Hopefully this forum can help people consider holistically the impacts of the tourism business and their personal travels (and any other industry and activity).

Best regards,

D
